On Broad City, Learning To Love Yourself Is The Greatest Love Of All

As this second season of Broad City has progressed, one of its pleasures has been how the show's producers have built its world with inter-episode continuity that, as writer Anthony King noted in our interview last month with regard to the "Val" gag from the season premiere paying off weeks later in "FOMO." In the latest episode, we get to see more of this, as Abbi's Bed Bath & Beyond loyalty ends up being an obsession she shares with her potential new celebrity bestie Kelly Ripa...

...oh, and also in that mirror-masturbator Ilana falls for a girl who could be her fraternal twin.

Jaime's gotten Ilana and Abbi gigs checking coats at a charity event, which Ilana (a) does wrong -- you don't keep all your tickets, lady!, and (b) blows off for a bathroom break almost immediately. When she's on her way back to rejoin poor Abbi, she has an unexpected encounter.

This mystery charity patron is "the hottest girl [Ilana's] ever seen," and when she abandons Abbi again to track her down, it seems the attraction is mutual, and things escalate very quickly -- almost as though they can read each other's minds!

Perhaps it's out of relief that Ilana's focused her lesbian energy on someone else for a change -- or because she's working on tracking down Kelly Ripa's coat so that they can be friends -- that Abbi remains pretty uncurious about Adele, the first person to deliver Ilana's first simultaneous orgasm scenario. (Or maybe she's afraid that if she asks to see a photo, it will be of something other than Adele's face?) So Abbi spends most of the day after the event totally unprepared for what's going to happen when she meets Adele.

But Abbi does!

And though it's difficult to imagine anything disrupting Ilana's ability to get off, once your best friend/until recently most intense gay crush tells you you're into someone because you look alike, apparently Abbi's heads-up...well, ruins Ilana's head.

When Ilana gives Adele The Tap to say that it's recently come (heh) to her attention that they could easily board planes or take the MCAT using each other's IDs -- these are my examples, but they really could -- Adele is unfazed: "Yeah, no shit....I'm not blind." She assumes that's what drew Ilana to her in the first place, and when Ilana's denial pretty much confirms it, they realize they have something else in common: Adele masturbates in the mirror too! Apparently, it's this kind of self-exploration that allows Adele to make her strongest pitch for Ilana not to break things off between them: showing Ilana where her G-spot is.

Ultimately, Ilana decides she's definitely committed to having sex with people who are different from herself, though she'd like to stay in touch with Adele -- "for organ donation, or jury duty." They seem to have everything meaningful in common, so they can at least be friends, right?

We can leave aside the matter of whether Ilana is cheating on Lincoln, since as she herself has recently reminded us, "Vulvarine" doesn't acknowledge any sort of restrictions on her sexual life -- and since, if this whole affair becomes part of Broad City's Season 2 continuity and Lincoln later finds out about it, I really can't imagine Lincoln raising any objection to the idea of Ilana and Ilana 2 giving in to their instant and extremely intense mutual attraction. Maybe weed tore Adele and Ilana apart in the end...but if they find themselves at Ricky's someday, both reaching for the last blow-dryer diffuser, who's to say what the future could hold?
