How The Boyle Body Double Stole Brooklyn Nine-Nine's Hallowe'en

Second only to the Great Pumpkin Peanuts special, Brooklyn Nine-Nine's heist episodes are among TV's most beloved Hallowe'en traditions. Since the show's first season, Jake and Holt have battled one another in a contest to steal a relatively inconsequential object and earn the title of "The Ultimate Detective / Genius" (and the plaque that goes with it). I couldn't possibly walk you through all the twists and turns of this year's installment -- in which three teams of combatants compete on the field of battle (...the squad room bullpen, at the center of which the plaque is locked in Amy's childhood Caboodle) -- so I'll focus on Team Jake, and its secret third member.

When the time comes for past winners Jake, Holt, and Amy each to pick a teammate, Holt throws Jake's plans into chaos by choosing Boyle for himself. Jake is then forced to work with Gina, who assures him that she's capable of doing anything Boyle could. Jake doesn't disagree that she's very capable, but says there's one thing she can't do as well as Boyle: "Look exactly like the body double I got for him."

Meet Bill! You might be shocked to learn that a local talent agency even has a Boyle body double, and you'd be right: this is just some random guy Jake spotted on the streets of Brooklyn. At first, we don't much about him other than that he's up for whatever.

Dress up as Gina so that no one watching the Caboodle suspects that the real Gina is creeping up on it on roller skates behind a mail cart? Sure! And in the downtime as Gina pulls off her part of the heist, Jake gets to know the man under the wig.

Once we know that Bill's a semi-professional freak, his other side hustle starts to inform his work with Jake, though even Jake has a hard time defending his hired hand from Holt's characterization of Bill as a "male prostitute."

And when the plaque goes missing and no one takes credit for its theft, things escalate.

When Boyle enters and refuses to turn on his own teammate, Holt, Jake tries to sway him through jealousy, calling Bill his new best friend. Boyle sputters that Bill was just a prop for the heist. Jake admits that's how it started: "You know how these things go -- spending time together. Sharing intimate secrets. Laughing about nothing in particular."

Someone this skittish about the touch of Jake's hand could never be his best friend.
