'I Feel Different Than A Man, And It, Like, Pisses Me Off That I Have To Think About My Reproductive Anything'

Everyone who embarrassed him- or (mostly) herself in the 'Feminism' episode of Raising McCain, in their own stupid words.

  • When I think of feminism, I think of old school, 1960s, 1970s, 'a woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle' definition, and that, quite frankly, doesn't define me anymore. I would like to be equal to a man when it comes to pay and treatment in the workplace, et cetera et cetera, but we're not the same. So I just got invited to speak to a group of high school students about feminism, and I'm kind of panicking, because I don't know what being a feminist means anymore, and I don't even know if I consider myself a feminist. I like wearing makeup, I like wearing push-up bras, and sometimes I dress slutty on Hallowe'en. So do I get to still be a feminist? I don't know the answer to those questions!
  • Can we just look up, like, the definition of 'feminism'? Like, it's a good starting point.
  • But being, like, equal doesn't necessarily have to be the same.
  • I feel different than a man, and it, like, pisses me off that I have to think about my reproductive anything.
  • I think those are just human issues.
  • I don't know, I just feel like it's a dated concept.
So I think this is really about a word, and a word that has a negative con-no-tation.
  • It's obvious that feminism is about equality. But things get tricky when you bring up sex.
  • I did an interview with Playboy about a year ago. One of the quotes that I said was that I love sex and I love men, and it was in a broader conversation about the term. And when that quote came out and hit the internet, it exploded everywhere. A lot of the things that happened afterward was slut-shaming. It was from other women.
  • I just don't know if I want to be a feminist if it means that I'm going to be judged for not fitting in a mold because I want to talk about sex.
  • It's totally possible to be a sexy feminist.
I love your brand of feminism, and it's definitely one I can get on board with.
  • Who doesn't like getting attention from the opposite sex from time to time? Does our generation think differently about sex and objectification?
  • We're the porn generation, whether we like it or not.
  • I have learned a lot about sex from porn?
  • There's a lot of drama about how women aren't allowed to be in the Navy SEALs.
  • In a war situation, the most intense situation a human being can be put in, I still think a man would have some primal instinct to protect a woman.
  • The beauty of Sheryl Sandberg is that she has mass appeal. She can take something like feminism, which is one of the most polarizing topics there is, and make it scalable.
  • Even the most progressive guys will probably have, like, a negative reaction to feminism, because they might see it as, like, a zero-sum game.
  • I do like Sheryl Sandberg a lot, and I think anybody making that attempt and trying to, you know, bring feminism-- give feminism a new face is awesome.
  • What do you think about fucking feminism?
  • I was obviously so interested to talk to you because you've-- A female working in New York politics for thirty years, which, I just tip my hat to you, because I've only been in politics for eight years!
  • The hardest criticism, and the most personal and ugliest, is always from other women in politics.
  • Do you think Mom could be a politician?
I don't think Mom could be a politician. I think our mother is the greatest politician's wife in the history of the free world.
  • But I do think my mom is a kind of feminist.
  • You guys aren't scared of voting for a woman, but I've met a lot of people that said they wouldn't vote for Hillary Clinton because she's a woman.
  • Do any of you care about what a feminist is?
  • I don't want there to be any women anywhere that feel like they can't be part of the feminist movement, and feel like they can't be part of making equality greater for women.
  • So I wish more women would get behind the term 'feminism,' but I can't be a hypocrite, 'cause I didn't know if I could get behind it at the beginning of this episode. I'm going to fucking call myself a feminist in the same way that I'm going to call myself a Republican, and just because it doesn't fit into the old mold that is broken and sort of stereotyped too many people doesn't mean I can't help change it.
