SNL Season 40: The First-Time Hosts We'd Like To See
With Season 39 barely cold in the ground, it's time already to look ahead to the future!
It's that time of year again: with one SNL season ended, we can look ahead to the next and make some extremely salient and reasonable suggestions as to which first-time hosts we'd like to see. SOMEhow, the show's producers did not take any of my suggestions from this space last year. But I'm willing to give them a chance to make things right in the year to come. Here, in no particular order, are the stars who deserve a shot at the guest host slot.
Kristen Bell
Plug-Ready Project House Of Lies; Frozen and the Veronica Mars movie (retroactive).
Could Easily Do An Unflattering Yet Hilarious Impression Of Anna Faris.
Why She Might Get Called If 2/3 of the monologues this season are anything to go by, the show really loves it when people sing, which she can definitely do; she already got her SNL training wheels with The Maya Rudolph Show.
Why She Might Not If the Maya Rudolph stink stuck to her.
Tom Mison
Plug-Ready Project Season 2 of Sleepy Hollow.
Could Easily Do An Unflattering Yet Hilarious Impression Of James Franco.
Why He Might Get Called It's nice to give ladies/gay bros eye candy too sometimes; occasionally you have to promote a show that ISN'T on NBC; Brits can act.
Why He Might Not Refusing to break Ichabod Crane character, is excessively dismissive of Lorne Michaels as a "crass showman who mistakes himself for a king."
Judy Greer
Plug-Ready Project Archer; her new FX sitcom Married; Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes.
Could Easily Do An Unflattering Yet Hilarious Impression Of Amy Adams.
Why She Might Get Called She's already been the best thing about a lot of so-so comedy projects.
Why She Might Not New cast members don't need this one to outshine them straight out the gate.
Anthony Anderson
Plug-Ready Project His new sitcom, Black-ish.
Could Easily Do An Unflattering Yet Hilarious Impression Of Michael Strahan.
Why He Might Get Called He's funnier than a lot of his past credits (yes, including Malibu's Most Wanted) would lead one to believe; maybe someone has an idea for a sketch with more than two black guys in it?
Why He Might Not If he didn't get tapped when he was headlining an NBC sitcom (Guys With Kids) produced by an SNL alumnus (Jimmy Fallon), it just might never happen.
Rose Byrne
Plug-Ready Project The Annie remake; Neighbors (retroactive).
Could Easily Do An Unflattering Yet Hilarious Impression Of Kylie Minogue.
Why She Might Get Called She's got ties to the show via her Bridesmaids co-stars Kristen Wiig and host fave Melissa McCarthy.
Why She Might Not If no one at the show feels able to pretend Annie is going to be watchable.
Chris Pratt
Plug-Ready Project Guardians Of The Galaxy; the final season of Parks & Recreation.
Could Easily Do An Unflattering Yet Hilarious Impression Of Seth Rogen.
Why He Might Get Called He's made it pretty clear on Parks & Recreation that he will do basically anything for a laugh.
Why He Might Not People might think he's Chris Evans?
Viola Davis
Plug-Ready Project Her new Shonda Rhimes drama How To Get Away With Murder.
Could Easily Do An Unflattering Yet Hilarious Impression Of Iyanla Vanzant.
Why She Might Get Called Maybe someone has an idea for a sketch with more than two black ladies in it and Maya Rudolph's not available to cameo?
Why She Might Not Viola Davis's quiet dignity would cause Vanessa Bayer's Quiet Dignity to dry up and blow away.
John Mulaney
Plug-Ready Project His new sitcom Mulaney.
Could Easily Do An Unflattering Yet Hilarious Impression Of Disney's Peter Pan.
Why He Might Get Called He's an SNL (writing) alumnus, and Lorne Michaels is producing his sitcom.
Why He Might Not When he actually worked on the show, he didn't so much get the chance to appear in sketches; maybe there was a reason?
Rashida Jones
Plug-Ready Project Her new sitcom Angie Tribeca.
Could Easily Do An Unflattering Yet Hilarious Impression Of Lizzy Caplan.
Why She Might Get Called She's already goofed around in sketches (to enjoyable effect) on Jimmy Fallon's talk shows; she's created an assload of sitcoms in the past year so presumably she knows something about comedy.
Why She Might Not Between the show she's starring in and the eighty others she's producing, maybe she literally can't take a week off?
Martin Freeman
Plug-Ready Project The last Hobbit movie; the next season of Sherlock, whenever that may be and PLEASE LET IT BE SOON.
Could Easily Do An Unflattering Yet Hilarious Impression Of Elton John.
Why He Might Get Called He's a Cambridge Footlights alumnus and a cast member of the original British version of The Office.
Why He Might Not See above. He might actually be overqualified.
