Gasland

Walt goes into overdrive trying to cover up Jesse's mess. It doesn't totally work, but on the plus side: hotel!

  • Previously

Hank (Dean Norris) tried to turn Jesse (Aaron Paul); Jesse finally called Walt (Bryan Cranston) on his increasingly clumsy manipulations; Jesse then figured out that Walt had poisoned Brock (Ian Posada) two seasons ago, and how, and decided that rather than leaving town as he and Walt and Saul (Bob Odenkirk) had discussed, he would splash gasoline all over Walt's house instead.

    Crisis Management

    Who called the meeting? Walt.

What's it about? Having come home to find evidence of Jesse's having doused the house with gas but not actually struck a match, Walt is deputizing Huell (Lavell Crawford) to get Saul started on figuring out where Jesse went and how they're going to deal with the situation if Jesse's gone fully rogue.

How'd it go? So-so. Huell promises Walt that Kuby (Bill Burr) is working on finding Jesse, but as crisis managers go, Huell doesn't have quite the soothing certainty of an Olivia Pope. So Walt decides to take matters into his own hands and leave a message on Jesse's new Hello Kitty phone, thanking him for not following through on the mayhem he'd obviously planned and pleading for Jesse to talk to Walt so that they can figure things out together.

This Is The Ethical Line Walt Won't Cross?

    Well. Keep looking.
    What then?
    What do you mean?
I mean Pinkman's like a bad penny. Sooner or later, he's going to turn up. I'm wondering what you want to do when he does.
Jesse is upset about the boy. I just need to explain to him why that had to happen.
Okay, but say, you know, just for the sake of argument, the kid's not in the mood for a nuanced discussion of the virtues of child poisoning. You know, his plans are running more toward stabbing you with a pointed stick. In that scenario, then what?
    You have a suggestion?
We were wondering if maybe this isn't an Old Yeller-type situation.
    Old Yeller.
Yeah, Old Yeller was the best, most loyal dog there ever was. I mean, everybody loved that mutt. But one day, he showed up rabid, and little Timmy -- for Old Yeller's own sake -- had to-- I mean, you saw the movie.
You're full of colourful metaphors, aren't you, Saul. Belize. Old Yeller. Just brimming with advice. Do not float that idea again.

    Skyler vs. Walt

Just because Walt convinced Junior (R.J. Mitte) that the "total pump malfunction" was actually a cover story for Walt having passed out from the fumes because his chemo's made him weak doesn't mean Skyler (Anna Gunn) bought it for a second. At the hotel, she watches Walt meet Saul in his car for a Jesse update, and then confronts him about what's happened: her fears have come true, and Walt's actions have put his family in serious, imminent danger. Walt tries to tell her what he told Saul -- he's going to find Jesse and make him see reason -- and Skyler's like, "So I'm clear: these aren't just euphemisms you're using here, right?" Walt is aghast as Skyler tells him in no uncertain terms, "You need to deal with this" and "After everything we've done, you can't just talk to this person."

Winner: Skyler, who buttons the discussion with "We've come this far for us. What's one more?" Even Walt can't really argue with this kind of evil logic.

Jesse Didn't Start The Fire, Because Hank Stopped Him

Who called the meeting? I mean, it's not so much a meeting as an intervention, but Hank is the prime mover.

What's it about? Jesse's about to burn down the White house, but Hank wants him to consider hurting Walt even worse: helping Hank build the legal case against Walt, and becoming the architect of Walt's ultimate destruction.

How'd it go? Jesse is in a very bad way emotionally, sobbing as he screams, "He can't keep getting away with it!" Hank remains calm, and convinces Jesse to suspend his arson plan and leave the house with Hank.

    A Man, A Plan, A Plaza...This Isn't A Palindrome

After Jesse gets a nice cup of black coffee from Marie, he sits down with Hank and Gomie (Steven Michael Quezada) to tell his side of the Walter White story. While this is going on, Walt calls Jesse with directions for a meet: he wants to go to a wide-open plaza by the Albuquerque Convention Center, and he'll be there alone and unarmed, so if Jesse wants to come shoot him in the head, that's cool. This is great news for our DEA friends, but Jesse is not so sure.

Go and listen. He wants to explain himself. We put a wire on you, let him explain.
So your plan is to do his plan? You seriously think that this whole "once and for all in the plaza" thing is so he can talk to me?
    Why not?
I can't believe you two. The dude wanted me out of town before I came to burn his house down, and now I'm even more of a threat to him, okay -- and he's got a zero-tolerance policy on threats, you know. If I go to this plaza, I'm a dead man, is why not.
Hey, Walt's ruthless. He'll do just about anything to protect his interests. I agree. Except when it comes to you. He cares about you. Can't you see?
Oh, yeah, you mean when he's not ripping me off, or calling me an idiot, or poisoning people that I care about. Yeah, no, Mr. White's gay for me!
