The Fear Of Todd
What business could possibly cause Todd to leave Ilana unsupervised? Let's find out!
I love Ilana. You love Ilana. But let's be honest: if she were a real person and you had to try to be your boss, you would probably kill her and then yourself by lunch. If she even made it in to the office by lunch, which she probably wouldn't. That's why it isn't such a shock that, in this week's episode of Broad City, Todd plaintively tells Ilana that she really has to line up just one deal. First of all, it's her job -- which she may not have realized, given that this is the day she learns that in doing so, she actually gets a commission. But second, it feels like Todd's setting her a task he's pretty sure she won't be able to accomplish so that he'll have no option but to fire her -- presumably because he hasn't been able to prove that she's been flagrantly abusing her bathroom privileges.
Todd also needs to give Ilana a challenging, time-consuming assignment and make it clear that he expects her to complete it because he's not going to be there to manage her today. Unlike Ilana, Todd actually takes his job seriously, so it's uncharacteristic behaviour for him to absent himself from the office for most of the day. What could Todd have to do that takes precedence over making sure Ilana doesn't figuratively OR literally burn down Deals Deals Deals? It's an unfortunate errand: he's been the victim of a violent crime, and he's been called to the police station to identify his attackers. And apparently not for the first time -- possibly because the detective who caught his case isn't actually interested in pursuing charges against the savage gangsters who broke Todd's pinkie, hurling abuse at him all the while. What was that line again?
