Sharing Darryl As An Enemy Makes Boyd And Raylan Friends

Or friendly, anyway. And not for long.

"Oh Right, All That Stuff We Did."

    Alert Type: Piper-Payment Alert.

Issue: Alberto's come to Lexington looking for Boyd to seek redress for...you know, all those people who got murdered in Mexico when Mr. Yoon specifically ordered Boyd to kill zero people in Mexico.

Complicating Factors: Even though Wynn tries to cover for Boyd by claiming to have killed Boyd after Boyd blew up Picker in Wynn's hotel suite, Alberto doesn't believe him, and anyway, he's going to need to take back Boyd's skin to Yoon as proof of death -- though, if he can't get that, he'll take Wynn's instead. He's also looking for Darryl, and no one knows where that fucker is.

Resolution: Wynn calls Boyd to his RV to strategize, which of course is when Raylan shows up with Rachel and Tim. None of them believes Wynn's claim that he's no longer staying in his hotel suite because the microwave blew up (apparently the hotel is owned by old Dixie Mafia money); furthermore, they're going to be impounding the RV until Wynn gets up to date with his registration, and did he also know that his home security business owes back taxes? Boyd is not impressed by the marshals' attempt to get at Daryl by squeezing all his cohorts until someone rolls over on him, so Raylan announces that they're pulling his file too. "All that red meat, and only now you're going to hang it on me?" sniffs Boyd. "Never did I imagine that the cat would trap the mouse with a file." "The Grand Jury don't give two shits how you've been trapped," Raylan replies.

Spoiler: Once Wynn and Boyd figure out that they're never going to recoup their dope investment and just have to escape this situation with their lives, their innovative solution is...for Boyd to give volunteer to co-operate with the marshals.

What Happened To Raylan's Southern Manners?

I get that Raylan is so desperate to take down Darryl for shooting Art (and for everything else, but mostly for that) that he's willing to use literally every possible angle he can to do it, and sure, one way he can get leverage over Boyd is through Ava, he thinks. And I know it's very inconsiderate of Ava to have broken up with Boyd before Raylan could use their connection against Darryl. But when Ava refuses to talk Boyd into giving up Darryl unless Raylan can get her "clean out of" prison -- which he can't -- I kind of can't believe that his next gambit is to tell her he's going to put pressure on her by threatening, "Seeing as you're in here for shanking a CO in County, how much of a nudge you think I need to give the screws in here to get them to look the other way as concerns your welfare?" RAYLAN J. GIVENS! Even if it's a completely idle threat (which it almost certainly is; I can't imagine Raylan actually giving an order like that), it's a pretty terrible one for you to make to someone you have ANY KIND of history with, never mind a lady you used to love, and do you really think she actually shanked that guy? This is the same Raylan that was rude to the hookers a couple of episodes ago and I do not care for it any more now than I did then!

    Shitbirdwatching

Who called the meeting? Raylan probably called Vasquez, but it seems pretty ad hoc.

What's it about? How suspicious they should all by about Boyd's sudden co-operativeness.

How'd it go? Pretty efficiently. Everyone agrees that they shouldn't take Boyd's attitude at face value, but they're not sure what he might want in exchange for his helping the marshals on the Darryl question. Rachel remembers that "his old lady" is "in the state pen" (and it's still very weird to hear the shitkicking patois spoken in Erica Tazel's elegant, precise accent), and Vasquez notes that for Ava to be released early would be hard but not impossible.

    Justified

Then Raylan heads in to prime the Boyd pump (not like that) (unfortunately). Turns out that all Boyd wants is a clean slate: he's thinking about leaving Kentucky and wants to start fresh.

    Justified

And THEN the whole crew's in the conference room, listening to Boyd's not very credible story about some rando happening to find some bricks of heroin abandoned somewhere, that Darryl is "looking to build a house" with those bricks, and that Darryl is going to retrieve them right now. (So...one-third false and two-thirds true.) Raylan says they don't want to arrest Darryl for felony possession: "We want him on attempted murder." Boyd: "Why, Raylan Givens, I'm extending my hand to you. Why you want to bare your teeth?" Vasquez decides that they should just get Darryl on whatever they can. What about Kendal? One thing at a time. Boyd offers to circle the spot on a map, but no such luck: Raylan says Boyd's going with them. Boyd doesn't seem to have considered this possibility, somehow? Anyway: some forward progress is made, so I guess it's a good meeting.

    Jailhouse Follies

    Alert Type: Power Vacuum Alert.

Issue: Now that Judith's been killed, there's a vacancy at the head of one of the prison's gangs.

Complicating Factors: Since it's known that Ava killed Judith, she's the obvious replacement, and Judith's old girls are falling in behind her, but Ava's old antagonist Gretchen is not on board.

Resolution: Gretchen's main henchwoman sends Ava a message about not overreaching by killing Penny in the bathroom.

Spoiler: Once Ava realizes how badly she needs Raylan's help, she's a lot less useful to him than she had been before.

    Bar Fight

    Who called the meeting? Darryl.

What's it about? Having badly beaten Mikey in the murdered-up hotel suite to try to find out where Boyd hid his share of the heroin, Darryl's moving on to a thug that might actually know: Carl. And Caleb, who has the misfortune of loading in booze when Darryl appears.

How'd it go? It starts off poorly: Carl, holding a box of booze, is at a disadvantage given that Darryl's already drawn on him by the time Carl gets into Boyd's bar. He tries to stay tough, though, saying that if he tells Darryl where the drugs are, Boyd will kill him. But then Darryl shoots Caleb in the leg and Carl tells him where to look. Good meeting for Darryl; not so great for poor Caleb.

    Pills Make Everythings Betterer

    Alert Type: Codependency Alert.

Issue: Darryl needs to get Boyd's heroin from the place by the railyard where Carl and Jimmy hid it.

Complicating Factors: He can't pick it up himself because he suspects -- and rightly so -- that authorities will be watching him.

Resolution: Darryl tries to guilt a pill-addled Wendy into acting as his courier by claiming that he just wants to get the heroin and sell it in order to be able to afford a good lawyer for Kendal. When that doesn't work, he threatens her physically (again).

Spoiler: Darryl's right: the law is after him! Or, as the USPS puts it on those "sorry we missed you" slips, his agent, which in this case is Wendy. So even though she thought better at the last minute of opening the old-ass fridge the heroin was stashed in and walked out empty-handed, Raylan still arrests her...and since Boyd sees Alberto rolling by when all of this is going down, he's more amenable than usual to Raylan's suggestion that Boyd wear a wire to his next meeting with Darryl.

    Gas 'N Go

Remember Dewey? Well, his little shitbox of a car ran out of gas, leading him directly to this meet-cute with a sweet little old lady who catches him when he's in the middle of siphoning gas out of her tank. "You're a little touched, ain't you, child," she intuits right from the jump, and offers to go get him something to eat. "If you're just gonna be a minute, you might if I run in and take a shit?" Dewey calls after her. But she has an answer he's not expecting. And it's a shotgun.

    Justified

    So...no on the shit, then.

    Wendy vs. Raylan

For reasons unknown, Wendy thinks she will actually shame Raylan by complaining about the ways he has (according to her) tried to destroy her family -- first by killing Danny (which by the way, can all the Crowes knock it off with this charge? Because I've seen a lot of Darwin Awards candidates on this show but that's probably the Darwin-est), then by arresting Kendal, and now by taking her in too. Raylan calmly replies that Darryl is the one destroying her family, by using all his siblings and letting them take the fall for all the terrible shit he does, but Wendy says she knows Kendal is where he is because of her "bad mothering," and I guess she took enough of Darryl's Forget-Me-Nows to believe that Kendal really was the shooter and not Darryl???

    Winner: Raylan.

  • Wrap It Up
    Screens: FX

Dewey comes back to Audrey's to see Mina and Teena, his two favourite hookers, and get back the worthless Florida garbage he had gifted them with when he left!

    Justified

Then he runs right into the large client they gave his gator-teeth necklace to, and picks a fight!

    Justified

With Teena taping the whole thing on her phone, Dewey actually wins the fight (and maybe kills the guy? It's not clear) and gets his necklace back!

    Justified

Dewey lurks outside and spies Boyd going into Audrey's with his duffel bag! He does not, however, see the Feds' van parked nearby with a gigantic microphone sticking out the window!

    Justified

Boyd is just about to get around to talking about Kendal and trying to get Darryl to admit that he is letting Kendal take the rap for him when fucking Dewey busts in with two guns drawn! Boyd strongly urges Dewey to get out, but Dewey, as usual, is too stupid: "You don't think I'll shoot? I will shoot! The way I shot Wade Messer! Yeah, I killed his ass good, man! Two shots! ME! DEWEY CROWE!!!" He gets Boyd to open it and show him all the drugs inside, narrating all the while what's in it and that he's taking it!

    Justified

And walks straight into an extremely unfortunate surprise!

    Justified Justified Justified Justified

Ava summons Raylan to prison to say she'll get Boyd to talk if he will get her released! Raylan tells her that it's too late: Boyd's already co-operated! Ava can't believe it! Raylan says he's sorry and seems sincere! He says that if she's in danger, he'll see what he can do! When he's at the door, she asks what Boyd wanted in return for snitching, and Raylan tells her about his "clean slate" talk, though neither of them seems to know exactly what that means!

    Justified

Raylan gets back to the office to find Boyd still there because he hasn't gotten his phone back from Raylan but also to needle him! He suggests that they're going to have to bounce Darryl, who's there with his lawyer, and Vasquez indicates that it's true! Raylan says that if Darryl gets out he's going to come after Boyd, but Boyd's pretty sure that Raylan will kill Darryl first!

    Justified

In their ongoing project to starve Darryl's resources, Vasquez and Raylan go upstairs to ask something so hardcore that even Judge Bastard warns them that if they fire this bullet, they can't get it back into the barrel!

    Photo: Prashant Gupta / FX

Raylan comes back down and gets into it with Boyd, who still just wants his phone and wasn't even supposed to BE here today! Since Boyd's information didn't actually lead anywhere, though, Raylan reiterates the Grand Jury threat! He gets out Boyd's file, which is very thick and, when he drops it, sounds very heavy, and is filled with the names of people who believed Boyd's lies! But BOYD wants to know about the file on RAYLAN! Like maybe what it might say about a certain NICKY AUGUSTINE!

    Photo: Prashant Gupta / FX

Tim and Rachel overhear and are intrigued, though their immediate reaction, as long as Boyd's within hearing range, is to toe the party line about the FBI turncoat Picker fingered!

    Screen: FX

Raylan is dumbstruck by Boyd's accusation that Raylan was party to Nicky Augustine's murder, and when Boyd asks AGAIN for his phone, Raylan gives him what looks like a phone, but the camera stays on it so long that I have no choice but to assume that Raylan's bugged it, maybe with Boyd's knowledge/for his safety???

    Justified

Anyway, then Boyd goes out to the hall to call Jimmy FROM THAT VERY SAME PHONE to tell him to put the last six kilos in his office and then leave town and tell Carl to blow town too...but Jimmy has company!!!

    Photo: Prashant Gupta / FX

And then Raylan marches into the conference room for some news for the Crowes, and HOLY BALLS THEY'RE CHARGING KENDAL AS A MOTHERFUCKING ADULT, SEE HOW MUCH LONGER YOU CAN BOSS WENDY AROUND NOW DARRYL YOU PIECE OF SHIT!!!!!
