Phil: The Moment-Ruiner

The latest Modern Family seems like it might be a pivotal one for Claire (Julie Bowen), as a chance meeting between her and Gil Thorpe (Rob Riggle) at a grade-school Career Day leads her to the realization that she might be wasting her life and education as a stay-at-home mom, resulting in a public meltdown, and a job offer from Gil. Though Phil (Ty Burrell) fights it at first, thinking Claire is just part of a set-up that will allow Gil, his real estate rival, to mess with him, he realizes how important it is to Claire to feel important in a professional context, and backs down, leading to this warm and grateful hug.

Phil immediately ruins it by asserting once again that he had a veto over her career that he graciously declined to use, leading to a litany of complaints from her that even the show's editors know to truncate.

Over the closing credits, Claire returns from her first day working for Gil and tells Phil she's already quit, because Gil was treating her like a servant. Could a second hug be possible? Yes!

Phil, don't ask her mid-hug what's for dinner! Don't do it! D-- He did it.
