Sportsy Headlines Necessary Roughness Should Rip From Next

'Hey, that thing really happened with LeBron James!' - Our sports-hating commentator on the latest episode.

I was so gratified last week when a Necessary Roughness plotline revolved around a client of V3, the management company Dr. Dani (Callie Thorne) works for now, who wasn't an athlete, but an actor. I mean, it's not like they can cut the sports stuff out of the show entirely -- not without a title change and a relaunch, anyway -- but if they're going to draw me, a vehement sports hater, with the promise of John Stamos, it would be nice of them to give me something else to grab on to, and a plotline revolving around Devon (Sinqua Walls), an NBA star whose game has suddenly gone into the shitter, is not going to do it.

...or so I thought, until Dr. Dani confronts Devon and gets him to admit the reason he's been ignoring one of his teammates: the guy is sleeping with Devon's sexy young mother, Lana (Garcelle Beauvais, who's old enough now to play a young adult's mother?! Time does fly)! The story would be appealing on its own for the scandal factor alone (particularly since, prior to this reveal, Devon and Lana have kind of an Oedipal thing going on). But there's also the fact that the story is ripped from real-life sports headlines that even I could not avoid hearing about, and I'm sorry, LeBron James, if this USA drama brought some painful stuff back up for you.

So, in case any Roughness producers happen to be reading this, and want to give similar barely-fictionalized treatment to other real sports stories, but aren't sure which ones can be pitched to the sports-avoiders in the Roughness/Stamos fanbase: a few suggestions.

Aaron Hernandez

When a V3 client she's treated is charged with murder, Dr. Dani is asked to testify on his behalf...but can she really help this pro hockey player's case if she believes he's guilty?

Manti Te'o

A promising college soccer prospect is publicly humiliated when he seems to have been the victim of a hoax involving his late girlfriend, who apparently never existed, Dr. Dani must help put the pieces of his life back together so he can get his career back on track.

Jason Collins

A V3 baseball client approaches Dr. Dani for couples' counselling...but it soon becomes clear that what he really needs her help with is preparing his self-involved girlfriend for the revelation that he's gay.

Kevin Ware

Dr. Dani seeks a new therapist to treat her PTSD from watching a football game in which a player breaks a bone so spectacularly that it ends up sticking out of his skin.

Roberto Alomar

Asked to participate in the media rehabilitation of a V3 basketball player who expectorated on an official, Dr. Dani decides it's time to leave V3 and treat patients who have some sense of common decency.
