Parenthood Is Not Always A Blessed Event
What Is This Show? Pramface.
Where Can I Watch It? Hulu.
Where Is It From? The UK (specifically, BBC Three).
What's It About? Jamie (young Martin Freeman lookalike Sean Verey) and Laura (Scarlett Alice Johnson) hook up at a party when Laura is very drunk; Laura ends up getting pregnant. This complicates things for all the usual reasons, plus the age difference: she's eighteen, and about to take her excellent grades to university in Edinburgh, while Jamie is only sixteen and still in high school. Surrounding them are their two sets of not-especially-happy parents; Laura's friend Danielle (Emer Kenny), who's had to go to uni without her drinking buddy; Jamie's friend Beth (Yasmin Paige), who's pining after the oblivious Jamie; and Mike (Dylan Edwards), who...maybe is also in love with Jamie without being totally aware of it?
So It's Basically... Cuckoo with unplanned pregnancy. Or Canada's 18 To Life, with...unplanned pregnancy. For those (most) of you who haven't seen 18 To Life, it involves two brand-new high-school grads getting married and navigating the familial in-law blending: her parents are aging hippies; his are tight-asses. (It's hard to come up with an American analogue, since American sitcoms don't generally revolve around college-aged young adults, and please do not say Glee.)
And I'll Like It If... ...you like the original version of The Inbetweeners; it has the same spirit, though it's generally not quite as bawdy. (Er, other than a pretty graphic jerkoff scene in the series premiere.) Or if you enjoyed Anna Chancellor's comedic work in Four Weddings And A Funeral; here, she plays Laura's mother, Janet.
But I Might Not Like It If... ...your tolerance for teen drama -- even in a comedic context -- is very low.
How Would An American Remake Be Most Likely To Ruin It? It would probably cast really famous actors as the kids' parents and give all their shit too much play. But, even more likely, it wouldn't let Laura take several episodes to rule out abortion.
