Another Team Challenge Pops Up On Project Runway

Sally Beauty has the designers putting together collections based on the brand's new makeup colour palettes; your editors discuss!

Hello, I'm West Coast Editor Tara Ariano.
Hello, I'm East Coast Editor Sarah D. Bunting.

The Talk

Dear wife, you've gone clothes shopping with me more than probably any other person alive. So you know two things about this episode: that I was most drawn to the blue collection, and that I was delighted that it won!

Lifetime

To be completely honest, I thought Laurence's suit, with its weirdly proportioned tweed tuxedo tails, was the weakest of the collection. But I would buy every piece of Rik's and Roberi's looks today, I don't care that they were all wool and leather and thus...really not suited for a resident of the tropics.

I loved it too! I was surprised the judges responded to it the way we did, because although I loved it and would buy every piece -- well, not Rik's drop-waist dress, but that's on my big boobage, not on his design -- I thought they might consider it a bit junior, especially Roberi's. But it is exactly what I'd buy from the Target juniors department and wear with my grandmother's pearls, because I am a Wes Anderson character, apparently. But that COAT. Delicious.

I'm interested to hear what you thought of Team Neutral's collection. I didn't hate it, but I didn't expect it to win the pop-up vote.

Lifetime

For selfish reasons -- that I can't wear neutrals -- I was the least drawn to this one. In fact, I actually felt bad for the members of that team who were stuck with it because it seemed like their collection would automatically look drab next to the other two. It wouldn't have gotten my vote had I been walking through Soho that day, PROBABLY ON MY WAY TO PETER HERMANN TO BUY A NEW ORLA KIELY BAG, AS I HARDLY NEED TELL YOU, but that's exactly why I wished there had been more discussion of how instrumental the models were in that aspect of the challenge. If they really worked it in that window (and it was hard to tell from the little footage we got to see), they would have really contributed to the overall impression the somewhat blah collection actually made.

Of course, "your" collection -- the one in your colours, anyway -- was Red Violet. Lots of the former; kind of none of the latter. What did you think of that one?

Lifetime

I do love that camel color the team used as their darker neutral, but the execution looked lumpy on a lot of the looks, and I liked Jenni's but couldn't wear it because the crop top is my sworn enemy.

Red/violet, meanwhile, is my bestie, so while I completely agreed with Cornelius that it needed something to break up the relentless barrage of red, I would have bought Erin's coat in a second -- or, honestly, that vest/dress thingie Dexter made, if he'd modded it somehow so one might wear it with a brassiere. The whole mini-collection needed contrast edging or a purple shell under one of the looks to give the eye a break, but I didn't think it was that bad. "Good" thing the episode had the intra-Red drama to rely on to distract us from the fact that none of the looks was egregiously terrible.

OH, CORNELIUS. I feel bad now that I kind of knocked him last week (though I did turn out to be right that he was the next no-brainer cut, right up until he became Season 15's beneficiary of The Tim Gunn Save) because he really got railroaded this time. I'm sure some of the coziness we saw from Erin and Dexter was down to the editing, but it sure did seem like they'd been planning from the jump to sell out Cornelius as soon as they had the chance. AND, as the person in any group work assignment who ended up just doing shit rather than try to delegate, my heart ached for Cornelius when he gave Erin his skirt for her girl. The result was the best head-to-toe look in the collection -- and then how did he end up being the one to make aNOTHER skirt while Erin and Dexter dicked around? Hey, Erin? YOU OWE CORNELIUS A SKIRT.

I so felt for Cornelius there, for the exact reason you cited. All y'all bitches who got an A on that "group" project for making cootie-catchers while I wrote the entire thing and got rubber cement in my eyebrow, I TAKE PAYPAL. But: this isn't therapy. Still, it's easy to think that Cornelius should have just shrugged, "You better make something to put on your girl's ass; I'm done for the day," but I wouldn't have either in that situation (or didn't, many times though I was faced with it, sigh). As for sparing him because he got jobbed by his team, I'm not sure I would have done that either, but I think the judges felt like they couldn't eliminate Dexter because he's a cool kid or something? That said, I was fine with the TGS. I believe I picked Mah-Jing to go next, and based on that cheap-looking dress, he well could have if not for the street vote.

Mah-Jing was another designer who got screwed by the Button Bag, and he knew it from the second he joined Nathalia and Jenni, as his eloquent silence makes clear in this gorgeous gif you have made for the world.

Previously.TV

I'm glad that situation worked itself out for him, but my god, Nathalia, just take your meeting chips over to his workstation and include him. Better yet, just shut up.

I also liked that Mah-Jing took it upon himself to insert himself, literally, into the post-judging scrap that broke out between Cornelius and Dexter.

Previously.TV

That right there is a dad who's just trying to lower the temperature however he can. I did wish he had inserted himself between Cornelius and Erin after the Tim Gunn Save was announced, though, because her fake celebration was VERY CRINGEY.

Lifetime

Not to sound like a dad myself over here, but I feel like Erin AND Dexter are better than this. And Dexter's part of that green-room scrap read to me like he knows it, too, and he's not happy to have gotten called out. Erin and her Disco Big Bird eyeshadow narrative, ditto.

Lifetime

I don't think these are actually casually mean people. But since they're obviously the judges' favorites, they should try harder to deserve the honor and not coast on it at a teammate's expense.

And that's it for another episode of Sarah D. Bunting, Lofty Scold! ...Seriously, though. It annoys me more when it's designers who aren't dicks acting...like dicks.

And from the scenes from the next episode, it looks like Dexter's decided to stay on the Stank Attitude Train for at least one more station. Cool?

I don't know why I'd expect better from someone with ear gauges.
