Fools Rush In
While Daphne continues getting the full college experience by rushing a sorority, Bay distracts herself from her own relationship drama by getting way too involved in Travis's.
I want to believe the producers of Switched At Birth aren't deliberately widening the experience gap between Daphne and Bay -- and, like, at least Bay doesn't get assaulted or run afoul of the law this week? But Daphne's storyline involves her trying to rush a sorority, while Bay is dealing with Emmett continuing to "give her space" by not communicating with her, and between his silence and her Everyday Heroes project getting put on hold while all her Heroes get background checks, she's really got nothing to do but brood. And no, temping as an equipment manager or whatever because John's staff are quitting in protest or getting hired elsewhere doesn't count.
But let's get back to Daphne, who lets Iris rope her into rushing even though she's pretty sure she doesn't have time...but then gets sucked in when an eager Theta tells her that if she joins the sorority, she'll get access to hella old exams she can use to study. Daphne decides to be herself as hard as she can, and turns her interview into a monologue about all her great and/or quirky qualities, from her work at a free clinic to her switched-at-birth story to her famous father. When she doesn't get a bid, she's certain it's because she saw the rush chair leaving Mingo's room, and confronts her about it, which is when she has to get the fearless feedback that she came across like a goddamn nightmare in conversation. Daphne's "tribe" may not be the Thetas, but she does have her old Carlton tribe to hang with instead.
Elsewhere, the dudes are having lady problems. Toby is eager to ask Lily to move in with him, and Kathryn's reservations that he may be moving too fast are only confirmed when she sees Lily on campus, talking very flirtatiously with cute colleague Julian (Russell Harvard from FX's Fargo!), and then has to stand there when Lily introducers her to Julian as Daphne's mom instead of, you know, her boyfriend's. Though she doesn't say anything, Toby's move-in proposal goes completely awry, with Lily confessing that she has feelings for someone else. Meanwhile, Mary Beth and Travis are clashing because she wants to do things with him and he wants to hang out with his teammates; she's also jealous of all the fangirls who seem to have sprung up around him since he joined the baseball team. Encouraged by Bay to make a big gesture to remind Mary Beth of how much he means to her, he gallantly surprises Mary Beth by attending her ukulele circle (guys, I don't know, it's college) and missing his warm-up before a game, but things don't quite end as he'd hoped. When Bay -- who's spent most of the episode midwifing Travis's attempts to shore up his relationship -- goes to Mary Beth to promise her that she and Travis still have a chance, Mary Beth has to point out to her that maybe she's been so intent on reuniting Travis and Mary Beth because it's given her something to think about than her own rocky situation with Emmett. There's only one solution: Bay's going to Los Angeles, because next week's the spring finale and there needs to be some drama like whoa.
Switched-ish Element | Present? |
---|---|
Start strong! | The cold open is kind of blah: out running, Daphne crosses paths with Travis, who hasn't actually been home yet; his telling her that she's missing out on the college experience by working too hard is what catalyzes her plotline for the episode, but a mellow chat isn't much of a grabber to kick off the episode. |
Capers! | This is a borderline call, but: Bay covers for Travis when he misses warm-ups for a baseball game to go watch Mary Beth's ukulele circle. |
Bay is my hero! | At the end of an episode that mostly finds her sublimating her own pain by Kathrynning out over Travis and Mary Beth's rough patch, she saves her hero status by announcing to John that instead of continuing to give Emmett space, she's going to Los Angeles. |
Honestly, that plan could have used more thought | Everyone kind of falls into their plots this week. |
Daphne is relentless! | Though she initially gets into it just to keep Iris company, once Daphne commits to rushing, she goes hard -- way too hard. The Theta sister who interviews her finds her a self-important try-hard bore, which Daphne only finds out after confronting the rush chair: another one of Mingo's recent hookups. It's...awkward. |
Toby makes us sigh! | Toby! Don't get so focused on asking your girlfriend to move in with you that you miss all the signs that she's in the process of drifting away from you! |
John Kennish has all the answers! | Just because all of the assistant coaches are ditching John to follow the coach who just got fired doesn't mean John's going to abandon his stewardship of the UMKC Roos Of Baseball! Ohhhhh, no, he'll just hire a new assistant coach: BAY! Later, John says, in so many words, "I know this game better than I know anything else." No wonder he's so determined to make this coaching gig permanent. |
Kathryn loves a project! | She's still working away at her musical with Toby, and they've made so much progress that they're ready for a showcase at Regina's coffee house! Unfortunately, Kathryn may have rued that postering for the showcase was what brought her to campus to get an eyeful of Lily and Julian, the guy she is clearly moving on to once she's ankled Toby. |
Bad timing! | Well, see above. But it's elsewhere, too: Emmett and Bay are out of sync after she seizes on a call from him that turns out to be a butt dial; and when Travis agrees to let Mary Beth drive him to the game after her ukulele circle and he innocently says he'll just tell her ride she can leave -- a girl who drove him to the coffee house and then sat in the car waiting to drive him back to school -- Mary Beth and Travis's sweet reconnection turns into a breakup instead. |
Withholding information! | Kathryn may confront Lily about what she saw between Lily and Julian, but she knows it's not her place to tell Toby. |
