Let Tig Notaro: Boyish Girl Interrupted Cut Into Your Weekend Viewing Schedule
If you can, watch it with Taylor Dayne.
The good news is that, after her widely-publicized "cancer set," which became her album Live, Tig Notaro's has recovered her health and is, by all public accounts. More good news: when that set and album turned into such a sensation, her career took off: this year alone has seen the release of the documentary/standup special Knock Knock, It's Tig Notaro, the documentary Tig, and, this weekend, Boyish Girl Interrupted, her first standup special on HBO. The bad news is that if you've been obsessively keeping up with Notaro's recent work, a lot of BGI will sound very familiar to you...but the good news is that most of you are probably normal, unlike me, and that therefore, to you, it will all be new and hilarious.
Before her health crises in 2012 -- in addition to bilateral breast cancer, Notaro developed a serious gut infection called clostridium difficile -- Notaro's comedy was more goofy and weird than especially personal; this bit from a 2011 episode of Conan is a great example.
But naturally, in a post-Live world, BGI can't help covering some more emotional topics: her stepfather's announcement about Notaro's own funeral plot following the death of her mother (also in 2012; it was not a great year); introducing her fiancée to her family; how her body has changed since her surgeries. The audience at her special taping was, of course, very warm and welcoming, and you can hear how hard they're rooting for her even in this brief clip.
About two thirds of the way through, things change pretty abruptly.
I've watched a lot of standup comedy, and I can confidently say Notaro's BGI set ends in a way I have absolutely never seen before. As specials go, it's pretty special. Watch it now before it's nominated for 500 Emmys next year.
Tig Notaro: Boyish Girl Interrupted premieres Saturday, August 22 at 10 PM ET on HBO.
