Superheroes, Stefani, And Brian Williams Get Back In Front Of Your Eyes

While some fall shows (Dancing With The Stars, for instance) started tiptoeing back on last week, this post-Emmys week marks what I would call the thickest crowd of season premieres, and kicked off last night with the start of Gotham's second season, which we can apparently expect to revolve around a "Rise Of The Villains." If you were hoping Gotham, State Unknown, was finally going to get a handle on its crime problem, I'm sorry to report that will not occur. Monty Ashley -- already on the superhero tip for us with Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Arrow -- will be covering the show for us this season, and you can enjoy his début right here. So far, the parts he likes the best aren't the parts that are really very super at all: "Remember Harvey Bullock? The most fun part of the show? This is his only scene, and it just exists for Jim to come in and mope."

Elsewhere in TV superhero news: CBS isn't premiering its Supergirl (from Arrow and The Flash producer Greg Berlanti) until October 26, but it wants to make sure you don't forget it's coming, so it's released a new trailer.

Wisely, this one doesn't make the titular heroine look as much like a hapless romcom heroine as the last one did.

Whoops, wrong clip! But...after you watch the actual one, you can see how I might make that mistake.

Let's hope the Supergirl pilot has been retooled to reflect the legit criticism that first trailer sparked.

Elsewhere in last night's big TV returns: The Voice! Stephanie Cangro returns as well to cover the show all this season, and her first post pays homage its real star: "The usual boys' club is back, and, because the fashion gods are kind and the gossip gods are greedy, Gwen is too (seriously, how cool are her sequined yellow argyle pants?! They're giving me major Clueless vibes in all the right ways)."

Finally, today will see Brian Williams make his return to TV after...you know, that stuff that happened. "To interview Steve Rannazzisi?" That's a solid burn, but no: Williams will be anchoring NBC's coverage of Pope Francis's visit to the U.S. today, starting at 3 PM. I wonder if the Pontiff brought Allison a wedding present.
