Mindy Learns The Down Side Of Starf-- Hugging
Getting aggressively recruited to work for an extremely fancy practice opens Mindy's eyes.
There are a lot of terrible things, for Mindy, about trying to date Danny only to have him pull the ripcord out of fear when they've barely begun, but maybe the worst is having to work with him every day. So when she's approached by Dr. Sheila Hamilton, an incredibly elegant OB/GYN famous enough to have just been profiled in Vanity Fair, about joining Sheila's practice, Mindy does what she'd probably never consider under any other circumstances: she takes a meeting.
Sheila gives Mindy the hard sell in a way that makes you wonder if she follows Mindy on Pinterest. She's met at reception with a plate of freshly baked cookies. She's shown a selection of silk gowns. And when she realizes this is because Sheila intends to show Mindy the patient experience by giving her a pelvic exam, she gets such a transcendently great scalp massage by one of Sheila's associates that she doesn't even notice when the speculum makes its normally unwelcome and unignorable appearance.
After the pap smear: lunch! As predicted, Sheila takes Mindy somewhere very expensive (or somewhere that looks it, at least), and broaches a potentially touchy subject: Mindy's patients may not be able to follow her to Sheila's practice, because Hamilton Health Partners doesn't take any insurance. "In order to provide all our premium services" -- and to be fair, the silk for the robes is fair trade and the office has a damn yoga studio in it -- "we need to have our patients pay out of pocket," Sheila says. "Our Kegel-toning machine has to be serviced at the Swiss monastery where it was built." Mindy, alarmed, says that most of her patients can't afford to pay out of pocket, but Sheila tells her she'll get new patients -- and that she shouldn't be so snobby about them just because they're wealthy.
Mindy rejects the offer, but when she returns to the Schulman office to see that her colleagues have gotten wind of her possible defection and are preemptively packing up her shit, she goes back to Hamilton Health Partners to try to take back her rejection...only to see the office packed with other Indian women OB/GYNs interviewing for the slot of non-white person on Hamilton's imminent billboard -- and then the other doctors call her to save them from a riot in "Spaniard Harlem" (that's per Jeremy) over confusion about exactly what they're trying to do to women's breasts in their mobile medical office, so the rift is mended.
But surely Mindy will never forget what this escapade has taught her. Because if Sheila delivered North West, making Kim Kardashian one of Sheila's patients, and since she's rich and famous, does that mean that Kim...? Hmmmmm.
