How Long Did It Take Trophy Wife To Ensorcell Our Commentator?
Not long. Really not long.
New Show Attempted: Trophy Wife.
Premise: Youngish lady Kate (Malin Akerman) falls in love with older gentleman Peter (Bradley Whitford); taking him on means becoming part of his sprawling family, which includes his first ex-wife Diane (Marcia Gay Harden) and their twins Hillary (Bailee Madison) and Warren (Ryan Scott Lee), as well as his second ex-wife Jackie (Michaela Watkins) and their son Bert (Albert Tsai).
How Far I Expected To Get: As I already stated in our EHG Mini on this subject, and also last year when the pilot was first announced, as a Sarah Haskins completist, I was never not going to be into this show, so I expected to watch and love the whole thing. And I did! But when exactly did it win me over?

What Did It: Kate and Peter have their meet-cute at a karaoke bar, when Kate falls off the stage and into Peter's lap, breaking his nose with the microphone in the process. As she's calling for napkins to clean him up, Peter gives Kate a look of such dopey adoration that I immediately got on board.
I mean, the show doesn't work if the viewer doesn't buy the chemistry between these two characters. I did, and immediately wanted to see more of them together. Other high points of the episode include the best line in the trailer, delivered by Bert...

...this Bottle Rocket-inspired print by Kevin Tong (I have the Royal Tenenbaums one in my office!)...
...and Kate drunkenly spitting out too many Altoids.
Worth Taking A Run At It? You probably shouldn't take my word for it, because I'm not even kind of objective, but yes! A thousand times yes! It's promising if not super-hilarious (even I will admit that much), but honestly, when it comes to sitcom pilots, that's usually about the most anyone can hope for.
