Paul Scheer Bats 1000 In His Hollywood Game Night Debut
The sketch comic's improv talents drive a fun if...somewhat lopsided episode.
Worst First Impression
Oh no. Brian thinks he's a "character."
Worster First Impression
Ginger, way to take some of the stink off Brian with your weird personal story and too-young hairstyle.
This is the sort of off-putting personality that, when you screw up, will...
...get you straight-up laughed at by a game show host.
Best Dressed
I hate jumpsuits and even I am all the way into Constance Wu's flowy number, which clearly allows her a lot of movement.
My only critique is that this is clearly a garment that could work with a pretty flat sandal that would have added even more to her mobility. Next time!
Most Problematic Clues
Trading Faces continues to be a game that's way too easy when it's not way too hard -- I'm not too full of myself to admit that I did not grok Neil Patrick Harris's name sharer here at all.
(It's Ed Harris.) But I hope this episode led to some policy changes in the writers' room with regard to pairing up people who are not of the same race
I guess Photoshop blackface isn't as problematic as the kind with makeup, but still, let's maybe agree that this is an area to avoid.
Most Unfair Advantage?
I can't recall offhand another time where more than two co-stars (or...more than three people in a marriage, hee hee) have been on the same episode, so having three stars of Fresh Off The Boat -- Randall Park, Wu, and Paul Scheer -- feels like a real boon in Block Busters.
You can tell they have a rapport already and don't mind ordering each other around, whereas the strangers on the other team might have been more reticent and polite about it -- to their detriment.
Most Embarrassing Shut-Out
What can one say, really.
Most Welcome Upstager
Song Sung Wrong still feels like a needless showcase Jane Lynch demanded because she was bored, which is why it's nice to get it broken up.
UCB-iest Bonus Round (all-time)
It's pretty clear at the end of I Love A Charade which celebrities distinguished themselves the most.
And thus we have two titans of improv and UCBNY alumni yes-anding one another through an outstanding bonus round.
Next season I demand Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair!
