If You Miss Paul F. Tompkins: Crying And Driving, You'll Be The One...Regretting Your Choices
This standup special truly is special.
Last week, Nick Rheinwald-Jones and I co-lamented the fact that Paul F. Tompkins had not been named host of The Daily Show when that job became vacant. I stand by that opinion and will literally unto death, but the good news is that Tompkins has found another berth on Comedy Central: tomorrow night, the network will premiere his latest special, Crying And Driving. Preview clip? You got it.
I am not 100% objective because, as previously stated, I love Paul F. Tompkins. I live for the episodes of the Comedy Bang Bang podcasts on which he guests (and fans of those appearances may recognize a version of his Reverend Robert Parsimony voice in a character he does in C&D). I am heartbroken about the ending of the Dead Authors Podcast, and if you haven't listened to the two-part episode in which Andy Daly plays L. Ron Hubbard, you really must. Because I live on an island in the middle of nowhere, though, I don't get the opportunity to see Tompkins do live standup anymore, which is why this special is such a treat in addition to the usual reasons.
Without ruining any jokes, I'll say Tompkins is both hilarious and insightful about "weird man anger," and that the story of visiting L.A.'s Magic Castle is a complete delight -- but truly, it's great the whole way through. If you're like me, obviously you already plan to watch this; if you're not familiar with his work, trust me: you should be, and this hour will more than demonstrate why.
Paul F. Tompkins: Crying And Driving premieres Saturday, October 10, at 11 PM ET on Comedy Central.
